The end of the River Kwai Bridge Week, Kanchanaburi, Thailand

Description

This photograph was taken the day after the end of the "River Kwai Bridge Week",

an annual event. This event takes you back in time to World War II through the River Kwai Bridge, built by Allied prisoners-of-war. Kanchanaburi bridge was the part of the Death Railway that spanned the River Kwai. The annual event is named the River Kwai Bridge Week and Kanchanaburi Red Cross Fair, the highlight is the light-and-sound show that tells the stories of World War II in honor of the prisoners of war and Asian labourers who built the infamous Death Railway, the Bridge on the River Kwai and the Hellfire Pass. Many thousands of men lost their lives, due to dreadful conditions, illness, neglect and accident. The bridge became known as a symbol of the horrors and futilities of war through  the novel, The Bridge Over the River Kwai,by Pierre Boulle and the 1957 movie

based on it, The Bridge on the River Kwai. During the week long events, the reconstructed bridge (it was bombed during the war) is the setting for

sound-and light presentations, and there are also  historical exhibitions and rides on World War II-era trains. There was a lot going on that day, with people dismantling stages and seating and various props. Kanchanaburi is now a town of remembrance, with beautifully maintained cemeteries of those who so dreadfully lost their lives.
